A Shaughnessy makeover puts the focus on functional freedom

By Frank O'Brien

"flight deck'-sized island is now the pivot of this multi-use kitchen in a 15-year-old Shaughnessy home where a busy young family of five wanted more room for preparation, meals and entertaining. 'The island was asking to become the focal point," said Ralph Belisle of TQ Construction, whose team crafted the space into a leading finalist in the 2008 Georgie competition for the best kitchen in the province. The original kitchen had been divided between a "wok" kitchen (or butler's pantry) and a family kitchen, but lacked the free flow that the new owners required. TQ, working closely with Comet Interior Design, removed a wall, opened up the kitchen to the dining room and the deck and, in effect, created three complementing zones. "There is room for family meal preparation, formal meal prep and entertaining/' Belisle explained. Smart Wiring allows individual lighting to subtly enhance and differentiate each of the zones. The makeover required the removal of walls and the addition of marble floors, flecked granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, sinks and high-style faucets, all backdropped by solid cherry cabinetry. The family room is now connected to the kitchen via a full-height passageway and to the deck for summer dining by wide Eclipse folding doors. With advice from "green" consultant Jan Rutger, low-VOC paints, finishes and materials are used extensively. According to Belisle, the renovation shows what can be accomplished by focusing on the flow and function of a kitchen space. ■

Space and function were gained by removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room, removing a "wok" kitchen, replacing the island and the appliance package and creating avenues for free movement.

Countertops are flecked granite, contrasting with the light shades of the travertine marble floors. All cabinets are solid cherry. Note the Eclipse folding doors that open to a deck and add natural light.

The kitchen now accesses a family room, a dining room and the deck with three separate zones for family or formal meals and entertaining.

TQ is a Georgie finalist for B.C. residential renovator of the year.
