Probably the most popular Ham activity is Rag Chewing . Hams chew the rag on any band, at any time, and to anywhere. One of the most popular Ham bands, and one entirely suited to homestead communications, is the 2 meter band (144 to 148 MHz). Two meters is one of the most well organized and versatile of the Ham bands. Most areas abound with repeaters that work on the 2 meter band. A repeater receives and rebroadcasts radio signals for greater range. Some of these repeaters are interfaced with the telephone network and local nonbusiness telephone calls are permitted on them. The ultimate in repeaters is OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio). OSCAR was built by Hams and launched into Earth orbit by the U.S. government. OSCAR is used by Hams all over the world, and is a bridge to international communication and understanding.
Right now I'm living above the 8,000 ft. level overlooking the lights of Denver at night and my wife and I have been looking for just the right spot somewhere in the Pacific to set up a food-and-energy self-sufficient homestead. We've been to Fiji, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Tasmania, and Hawaii. Hawaii (except for the Big Island) is going fast and even the Big Island is increasingly raped these days. French Polynesia is absolutely beautiful but France is drenching it with fallout from nuclear tests. New Zealand is wonderful and will grow anything but there seems to be a lot of cancer there from all the pesticides the use (many of which have been banned here). Tasmania and other parts of Australia are also being developed at an increasing rate and Fiji-- which is still largely organized on a village-by-village self-sufficient basis-- is going through some dangerous political troubles.
John and Anita Pryor live high in the Siskiyou Mountains of Northern California. Their homestead is about 3 miles from the nearest commercial utility. Altitude is about 3,200 feet with a panoramic view of Mt. Shasta some 50 miles to the South. Solar insolation is about 240 full sun days yearly. While the location appears to have wind potential (at least in the Summer), no real survey of wind conditions has been made at the Pryor's location. Water sources at this site, while more than enough for domestic use, lack the fall or flow for hydro power potential. The commercial electrical utility wants just under 100,000. to run the power lines to John & Anita's homestead.
Two other DC appliances are worthy of note. The 12 VDC B W TV allows low powered viewing and doesn't require the use of the inverter. The CB radio is the homestead's only communication and is also 12 VDC powered. Note that the receive and transmit states of the CB are detailed separately in the consumption profile. This technique works for other appliances that consume energy at differing rates as they perform their functions.
