1 Measure the span of the base cabinets, from the corner to the outside edge of the cabinet Add 1* for overhang if end will be exposed. If an end will butt agamst an appliance, subtract Vie- to prevent scratches.

2 Use a framing square to mark a cutting line on the bottom surface of the countertop. Cut off the countertop with a jig saw. using a clamped straightedge as a guide Note Laminate cutting blades are available for cutting laminate countertops without ru imng the surface. If you are using a laminate cutting blade, cut the countertop with bottom side down

3 Attach the battens from an endcap kit to the edge of the countertop. using carpenter's glue and small brads. Sand out any unevenness with a belt sandor.

4 Hold the endcap laminate against the end. slightly overlapping the edges Activate the adhesive by pressing an iron set at medium heat agamst the end-cap Cool t with a wet cloth then file the endcap lam mate flush with the edges

5 Position the countertop on the base cabinets Make sure the front edge of countertop is parallel to the cabinet face Check the countertop for level Make sure that the drawers and doors open and close freely If needed, adjust the countertop with wood shims

6 Because waHs are usually un-even, use a compass to trace wall outline onto backsplash scribing strip. Set compass arms to match widest gap. then move compass along ¿ength of the wall to transfer outline to scribing strip

7 Remove the countertop. Use a belt sander to grind the back-splash down to the scribe line.

8 Mark a cutout for a self-nmm-ng sink. Position the s*nk upside down on the countertoo and trace an outl ne. Remove the sink and craw a cuttmg line inside the sink outline

Drill pilot hoie just inside cut-t'ng line Make cutouts with jig saw. Support cutout area from beiow so that falling cutout does not damage the cabinet

4 Hj Apply a bead o* silicone I I caulk to the edges of the mitered countertop sectons. Force countertop pieces tightly together.

9 Mark a cutout for a cooktop with the frame Position the metaJ frame on the countertop. and trace an outline around the edge o* the vertical flange. Remove the frame

Drill pilot hoie just inside cut-t'ng line Make cutouts with jig saw. Support cutout area from beiow so that falling cutout does not damage the cabinet

4 Hj Apply a bead o* silicone I I caulk to the edges of the mitered countertop sectons. Force countertop pieces tightly together.

H O Seal the seam between the backsptash and the I O wall with silicone caulk Smooth the bead with a wet fingertip Wipe away excess caulk

4 A From underneath cabinet install and tighten I Mm miter take-up bolts. Portion the countertop tightly against wall and fasten to cabinets by driving wallboard screws up through corner brackets into the coontenop Screws should be long enough to provide maximum holding power, but not long enough to puncture laminate surface.

H O Seal the seam between the backsptash and the I O wall with silicone caulk Smooth the bead with a wet fingertip Wipe away excess caulk
